Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary consists of lush tropical rainforest. There are also some moist deciduous patches in this sanctuary. Part of the forest has hilly terrain and there is a vast lake or reservoir in this sanctuary . There are not many reserved forests in India that offers intimate experience with the forest while you trek through the jungle and stay overnight in the tents. There is no intrusive wildlife tourism in Chimmony, so you can enjoy the wilderness without encountering any other tourists except the group that you are part of. When you are in Chimmony, you are in complete harmony with a virgin rainforest.
You will be participating in a 2 nights 3 days trekking program accompanied by our naturalists, eco guides and forest department guard. All the logistics of the trip including tents, sleeping bags, all meals and forest department permission will be managed by us.
Traverse the dense jungle, watch the morning rays filtering through the canopy of the forest, feel the cool water of cascading stream lapping at your feet, enjoy the mesmerizing views of turquoise blue Chimmony reservoir surrounded by lush green hills – all these are part of the experiences during the program. Spending the night at our campsite is an unique experience that you can cherish for your life. As the dusk falls, lanterns will be slung from the stumps and a small campfire will be made near your tent. You can listen to wildlife stories from our naturist while relishing some snacks sitting near the bonfire. After dinner, you can stargaze in a clear sky devoid of any light pollution or just lie down inside the tent closing your eyes and be immersed in the orchestra of nocturnal wildlife.
Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary is part of Western Ghats , one of the twenty-five bio-diversity hotspots of the world. So this sanctuary hosts innumerable endangered and endemic wildlife species. Because of dense vegetation, wildlife sightings will depend on your luck. You may encounter Gaur, Elephant, Macaque, Sambar Deer, Malabar Giant Squirrel, Monitor Lizard, Slender Loris etc. Even though Tigers and Leopards are there in this sanctuary, sighting of these big cats during a three-days trekking trail is rare.
Chimmony is not about Tiger tourism. The attraction of this sanctuary lies in having an intimate experience with the jungle and watching the lesser known but unique wildlife species that this park boasts of. You may be able to see Southern Birdwing, India’s largest butterfly and Blue Mormon, the second largest butterfly. You may also be blessed with the sight of a Flying Squirrel in the night or be marveled by the acrobatics of a Malabar Giant Squirrel high up on a tree.
There are over 200 species of birds including Great Indian Hornbill, Malabar Trogon, Nilgiri Wood Pigeon, Ceylon Frogmouth etc. Chimmony is also known for varieties of butterflies that includes Swordtail, Crimson Rose, Southern Birdwing, Blue Tiger, Blue Mormon etc.
Late September to May is the ideal time to visit Chimmony.
HOW TO REACH
The entry gate of the forest is located 35 km away from Thrissur town in Kerala. Thirussur is well connected via road or rail network with different parts of the country. It takes about 45 minute to reach the entry gate by road from Thrissur.
Nearest airport is Kochi International Airport. It will take about 1 hour 30 minutes to reach Chimmony from Kochi by road (65 km distance approximately).
Following itinerary comprises of 2 nights and 3 days program in Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary. If you wish we can customize your stay for longer or shorter duration.
Day 1: Our vehicle will pick you up from Thrissur town. On arrival at the forest entry gate of Chimmony Wildlife Sanctuary you will be briefed about the community based ecotourism program. A short walk (and a hour long boat ride in the reservoir, depending on the availability of the camp site) will lead you to our camp. Go for a short walk with your naturalist while your hosts cook your food. Simple vegetarian meals will be cooked and served at the camp. In the afternoon, our naturalist will take you for a walk through lush tropical jungle to watch birds and butterflies. Learn to read animal signs and evidences. You will see some rare and endemic orchids flowering. There are chances of spotting wild animals too. But don’t except to walk into a tiger. That requires a longer stay. Your eco-guides will identify the medicinal herbs they use. Exchange worldviews with your hosts over dinner. Your accommodation will be in tents. Sleeping bags are provided.
Day 2: Wake up at 5.30 am with tea and snacks. Go for an early morning nature walk with our naturalist. After breakfast, a trek with your naturalist through the dense moist deciduous forests will help you learn more about the life in the jungle. Expect to see wild animals during the trek. At camp, you are at leisure in the afternoon. Perhaps you would like to relax under a cascade of the nearby mountain stream. After lunch visit a nearby Rainforest patch, watch birds. Back in the camp discuss with your hosts, over dinner, their role in preserving these jungles. Listen to their jungle lore, encounters with wild animals…. long into the night. Star gaze. Learn to identify nocturnal birds by their calls. Or just let the jungle sounds lull you to sleep. Spend the night sleeping in tents and sleeping bags.
Day 3: Wake up at 5.30 am with tea and snacks. An early morning birding trek will further lengthen your bird list including some rare endemics. After breakfast we trek back to Chimmony. Meet representatives from the Malayan community and give your opinions and suggestions directly to your hosts.
